Certifications & Collaborations

Sharing the Responsibility
Domtar is committed to meeting the highest standards for forest, environmental and quality management. After all, in order to make our pulp and paper products, we rely on the forest. So it’s easy to recognize the importance of managing these precious resources — and protecting the environment — both for our own economic viability, and for the benefit of our stakeholders.

We believe the best way to assure that our forests, manufacturing and distribution operations are managed in a responsible, sustainable and transparent manner is through certification by internationally recognized third-party organizations. Rigorous independent scrutiny ensures integrity in the chain-of-custody from the forest floor to the market.

All of Domtar’s facilities are certified to the standards of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and/or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI).

The Canadian Standards Association is a not-for-profit, membership-based organization serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada. CSA’s CAN/CSA Z809-02 SFM Standard is Canada’s National Standard for Sustainable Forest Management. The Chain-of- Custody requirements were developed to link forests certified to CSA’s SFM Standard to forest products and consumers.

The Forest Stewardship Council is an international, independent, not-for-profit organization that sets global standards for responsible forestry.  FSC standards address important economic, social and environmental concerns in the forest products industry — and are widely accepted by over 85 leading environmental groups.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative is a fully-independent, non-profit forest and paper certification program that integrates the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the preservation of wildlife, plants, soil, water and air quality. In order to be certified, participants in the SFI program must undergo a thorough, third-party review of their operations by an accredited audit firm.

In addition, Domtar has established close working relationships with Rainforest Alliance, WWF and other stakeholders. The results of these collaborative efforts are unique testimony to our pursuit of responsible forest management practices.

Rainforest Alliance
Rainforest Alliance works to protect ecosystems by encouraging changes in business and land-use practices — and by seeking to alter consumer behavior. Participation in Rainforest Alliance programs requires compliance with rigorous standards that conserve resources and support biodiversity.

To earn support from Rainforest Alliance for the EarthChoice® family of papers, Domtar has committed to achieve FSC certification for 100% of the forests it manages and to increase the amount of FSC-certified fiber from suppliers.

World Wildlife Fund
Domtar has shared a working partnership with WWF-Canada for the past decade, and recently expanded the relationship into the United States by signing a licensing agreement to use the well-known WWF panda logo on all Cougar products and promotions in North America. Domtar is pleased to make an annual contribution of $275,000 to WWF to demonstrate our mutual commitment to conservation. This unique partnership brings together one of the most recognized environmental brands in the world with a leading brand in the graphic arts community for over 30 years.

Domtar’s relationship with WWF dates back to 1998, when Domtar and WWF-Canada collaborated on a regional roundtable as part of Ontario’s Lands for Life initiative. In 2003, the two organizations signed an agreement committing each party to work together to ensure the long-term conservation of forests in Canada. In 2007, an enhanced agreement was signed to ensure conservation of Canadian forests and to promote FSC-certified, environmentally responsible papers. Since then, Domtar has joined the WWF North America Forest & Trade Network, and the two organizations continue to promote forest conservation.

We look forward to working together for years to come. Look for the panda logo on Cougar® products, showcasing our support. To learn how you can show your support, visit worldwildlife.org or wwf.ca.
